We
breed standard poodles with a single purpose: to produce puppies
who will grow up to be ideal companion dogs for people of all
ages in a wide variety of social and physical circumstances.
To fulfill this mission it is important that our puppies be
born with the genetic blueprint necessary to give them the inherent
qualities, both physically and mentally, to be that special
dog.
Here is what we promise to provide to you:
- A healthy puppy. Our puppies are provided
with the very best of care from before conception. Our mothers-to-be
and their babies receive premium nutrition available only by veterinary
prescription. We are conscientious about immunizations for our
breeding dogs and for each puppy as recommended by our veterinarian.
All of our poodles, big and small, receive optimum treatment to
prevent parasites of all kinds. Our groomer provides weekly onsite
service to insure that all puppies are clean and well-groomed
with special attention to nail and ear care. Each puppy is thoroughly
examined and evaluated by our veterinarian before leaving for
a new home. Our spacious facility allows puppies to grow up in
an environment full of stimulating challenges for growing bodies
and minds including ongoing interaction with people and poodles
of all ages.
- A dog that stays healthy. We screen all our
breeding dogs to insure that they are free from the genetic conditions
that have been known to affect standard poodles. More importantly
we keep in touch with all of our fairhill farm poodles over their
lifetimes so that we know how they are doing as they mature into
adults and seniors. We have had no poodles in our breeding program
with any of the major genetically transmitted diseases known to
afflict the breed.
- Great temperament. We want to provide you
with a puppy that has the potential to be a calm and loving personal
and family companion dog in a variety of living circumstances.
Our poodles want to be part of the lives of their people whether
that involves the “high life” of Manhattan or the
rough and tumble of country living or both!
- A beautiful poodle. Our standard poodles conform
to the breed standard as established
by the Canadian Kennel Club. Although we do not endeavor to produce
show champion quality animals we do believe it is important to
preserve the time-honored physical qualities of the breed that
would make our poodles respectable representatives of the breed
in any setting.
- A lifetime commitment. You can return any
fairhill farm poodle at any time for any reason throughout the
life of the poodle. When I breed a dog I make a lifetime commitment
to the welfare of that dog.

Fairhill
Farm has been a recognized kennel registered with the Canadian
Kennel Club since 1988. Kathryn has been a member in good standing
with the CKC for over 20 years and has participated successfully
in numerous CKC Shows and Obediance Trials.
All fairhill farm puppies are registered with the CKC and in accordance
with their regulations all new owners of our poodles receive official
CKC registration certificates for their dogs. All CKC registered
poodles are eligible for acceptance into the American Kennel Club.
More About the CKC
A microchip is inserted into the withers (between the shoulder
blades) of each puppy before leaving fairhill farm. In addition
to being required identification for CKC registration, the microchip
is a universally recognized means of identifying your dog if he
were to be lost or stolen. More Information
on Microchips.

Even
a veteran dog owner can use a refresher when it comes to training
a new puppy.
Poodles are very fast learners; they learn everything including
the things that you don’t want them to learn. Eventually
your poodle will have you trained perfectly but until that happens
you can give yourself a head start in the “who is training
who” challenge.
Here is what we recommend to prepare for your new puppy:
Crate Train your puppy from the day you bring
him home. Use a crate that is easy for you to move around your home
so that you can have the puppy crate in a convenient place during
the day and night. On the first night it is good idea to have the
puppy near you in a crate by your bedside. Reassure the puppy that
you are near, tap on the crate or talk to him if he cries. Be supportive
in his first night away from his littermates and secure surroundings.
Sequestering a puppy and letting him cry is cruel. His instinct
tells him that being alone in a strange place is dangerous. In the
wild a pup who is stranded from his litter gets eaten!
House Training is mostly a matter of good timing.
Puppies “train” themselves from as soon as they can
crawl from their sleeping area to go outside their bed to urinate.
By the time they are ready for formal training they already have
an ingrained concept to keep their living area clean and select
a corner of their territory for elimination. You need to “explain”
what the boundaries of living area versus allowable areas to eliminate
are going to be. Make sure you anticipate the puppy’s elimination
needs and take him (pick him up) to the correct place to go. Praise
him effusively every time he does it right.
Feeding & Chewing - Start your puppy with
three feedings a day of a high quality kibble food. If possible
you may want to have some kibble available as a snack for the puppy
to eat when he is hungry. Poodles are easily bored by the same dry
food all the time. Try mixing a small amount of warmed canned dog
food with the kibble to make it more interesting. Do not use the
puppy’s food as a training tool to establish dominance. Remember
that your puppy is actively teething during the first year of his
life and he needs to chew. Provide him with dog safe chewables and
keep your shoes, and TV remote, safely out of reach!
Basic Obedience – Poodles want to learn
and to be praised but they are also independent thinkers. The first
time a poodle is presented with a new challenge he is eager to get
it right. By the third of fourth repetition he is starting to think
“what is in this for me?” Absolute consistency is essential
to insure that your dog will obey you and be safe from harm. Keep
it simple: focus on the things that really matter. Keep it positive:
puppies learn from repeating the “right” behavior. Never
punish your puppy for making an honest mistake.

Placing
a puppy on an airplane and trusting that he will arrive somewhere
far away unharmed is an act that requires a leap of faith. Our
experience entrusting our animals to Air Canada Cargo over several
years has given us the confidence that our faith has not been
misplaced.
Shipping animals of all types via airline cargo is an important
service that is taken seriously by the airline industry and is regulated
by international animal welfare organizations. Not all airlines
undertake the responsibility of shipping live cargo, but those that
do use planes that are specifically equipped to handle animals safely
and only under climate conditions that insure the safety of the
animals.
We have used the services of Air Canada Cargo for over eight years
in sending our poodles to places all over North America and have
never had a bad experience. On the few occasions when our poodles
have encountered an unavoidable delay in their trip the response
of Air Canada personnel has been above and beyond the call of duty
in each instance.
